Our visit to Cartagena, Colombia was a memorable experience. I would rate it 5.0 out of 10 among the destinations I have explored. Cartagena is undeniably stunning, with breathtaking architecture and a rich Colombian culture known for its warmth. The scenic views offered a truly spectacular backdrop. However, the persistent haggling by locals was a notable downside. Upon arrival at the airport, individuals eager to assist with luggage or transportation can be overwhelming. We opted for the Uber app, a practical choice that minimizes the risk of falling victim to scams, as they are prevalent in the region. It is advisable to remain vigilant and secure your belongings to prevent unnecessary tipping.
Hotels also posed challenges, with potential scams such as overpriced items in minibars. While dining options were generally satisfactory, there was a diverse selection of enticing cuisine to enjoy. Navigating the airport, particularly during customs clearance, proved to be a tedious process, with wait times exceeding two hours. Additionally, the requirement to wait several hours before check-in and security clearance prior to departure presented a unique inconvenience.
Despite these challenges, our overall experience in Cartagena was delightful, and we appreciated the beauty of the region. However, the persistent street vendors and aggressive sales tactics may deter future visits. In conclusion, while our time in Cartagena was enjoyable, it may have been a one-time discovery of this locale for me.
