The Republic of Honduras, situated in the heart of Central America, is renowned for its global exports of exotic fruits, exceptional coffee, and textiles. Additionally, it boasts stunning beaches, lush forests, and vibrant cities, all deeply rooted in a rich cultural heritage. My recent visit to the country held special significance, as it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of my husband's background and upbringing. It was a trip we had eagerly anticipated since our marriage, and despite the initial nervousness associated with my first international flight, the journey was seamless.Â
Departing from Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport on a Spirit Airlines flight to Comayagua, the uneventful travel experience was marred only by discomfort due to the inadequate seating. Nevertheless, I was able to mitigate this inconvenience and found solace in the reliable internet connectivity onboard.
Upon arrival in Comayagua, Honduras, our party disembarked from the aircraft and proceeded to the security area. The Honduran Immigration Officials provided efficient and courteous assistance, facilitating a swift clearance process. As I awaited the arrival of my Husband, Roussell, outside the terminal, our mutual excitement was palpable as we exchanged smiles. His emotional expression upon seeing me was quite moving, as he expressed his long-held dream of witnessing my arrival in his country. This heartfelt moment enhanced the warmth of the welcome, despite our travel fatigue.
Our friend Manuel awaited us to transport us to Tegucigalpa, the capital city, which is approximately an hour away from the airport. Notably, Tegucigalpa's primary airport now serves only small planes operating within Honduras, as a larger airport was constructed due to the original airport's limited runway, its close proximity to residential areas, and its position amidst mountainous terrain and neighborhoods.Â
In the streets, I saw the public transportation which is very different than the structure we have in the US and many other places around the globe. Many of the buses appeared to be private people who picked you up and took you to the towns or area’s in which they were going. They told you the location by the name on top of the bus. They also utilize older school buses from other countries as public transit. The Markets were so cool! I enjoyed walking through the streets and seeing all the different things for sale including many souvenirs and at that time the local soccer team from Tegucigalpa which was playing that day. A lot of pride and support in this town for their team!
For lunch, Rou and his friends took me to a restaurant called Restaruante El Patio! Definitely one of the places I recommend if you visit! The food was absolutely Incredible. The grilled meats to include pork, chicken and steak were so flavorful and simply delicious. We also had rice, beans, and vegetables. Additionally, they brought several pico and salsa’s that were also very very good. And, they brought melted cheese in sculpted clay dishes that melted the cheese for an appetizer dip. Needless to say, I was so full when I left but it was so good. We explored other area’s of Tegucigalpa before going to bed for the next part of our adventure to the Island of Roatan.
During our trip, we departed early in the morning for the Tegucigalpa airport, primarily used for domestic flights in Honduras. The airport's lack of recent renovations preserves the nostalgia of international flights, a nod to its history. Additionally, this trip marked my first encounter with Roussell's mother, Nolvia, fostering a cherished relationship and in-person connection.
Throughout our journey, the unwavering kindness and hospitality of the Honduran people were prevalent, regardless of the setting – be it urban, at the airport, or along the coastline. Roatán stands as an enduring favorite beach destination, ranking among the most beautiful places I have visited. Overall, I rate the Honduran experience an 8 out of 10.
